Famous for its dry, intensely aromatic Riesling, Rheingau is also home to sweet and
long-lasting dessert wines.
Particularly noteworthy districts are Eltville,Rauenthal & Hochheim.
Eltville wines on the whole are firm and light, Rauenthals, rich and spicy; Hockheims, soft and earthy with a surprising fruitiness. Major Eltville vineyards are Sonnenberg, Taubenberg, Klumbchen & Langenstück. Rauenthal producers of note include Baiken, Gehrn, Wieshell, Wülfen, Rothenberg and Herberg. The major Hockheim vineyards are Domdechaney, Stein, Kirchenstück, Holle, Daubhaus and Rauchloch.
The rest of the Rheingau regions, and their respective best vineyards are:
Erbach——Marcobrunn (without question)
Kiedrich——Gräfenberg
Hattenheim——Steinberg
Oestrich——arguably Lenchen or Doosberg
Hallgarten——probably Hendelberg, but opinions differ. other contenders are Deutelsberg, and Mehrhölzchen.
Winkel——Schloss Vollards
Johannisberg——Schloss Johannisberg
(there are so manu excellent vineyards in this famed region, it is really unfair to pick a best: the other "bests" include Johannisberger Klaus, Hölle, Kahlenberg, Erntebringer and Sterzelpfad .
Geisenheim——a tie: Rothenberg and Mäuerchen
Rüdesheim——probably Rottland, but others to note are Roseneck, Schlossberg, Lay, Zollhaus, Klosterkiesel and Hinterhaus.
